GOTS certification canvas bags are not all equal, the certificate must cover finished goods, not just raw fabric.
If you're sourcing canvas fabric or bags for an eco-conscious brand, you've probably seen "GOTS certified" on supplier listings. But what does it actually mean, and why does it matter when you're placing a bulk order?
What is GOTS?
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It's the world's leading certification for organic textiles, covering everything from raw fiber to finished product, including farming practices, dyeing, manufacturing, and labeling.
To carry the GOTS label, a product must contain at least 70% certified organic natural fibers, and every step of the supply chain must meet strict environmental and social criteria.
What is a GOTS TC Certificate?
TC stands for Transaction Certificate. It's issued for a specific shipment or order, not just the factory. When a supplier provides a GOTS TC, it means that particular batch of goods has been independently verified as GOTS compliant.
This is what your compliance team or retail buyer will ask for. A general "we are GOTS certified" claim is not enough, you need the TC for each order.
Why Does It Matter for Canvas Buyers?
What GOTS Certification Canvas Bags Must Include
Not all GOTS certification canvas bags are equal. The certification must cover the specific product category, finished goods, not just the raw fabric or yarn.A supplier can hold a GOTS Scope Certificate (SC) for fabric production only, which does not authorise them to sell GOTS-labelled bags. To source genuinely certified bags, you need a supplier whose SC explicitly includes "Manufacturing of Accessories" or "Finished Textile Products."When reviewing GOTS certification canvas bags from any supplier, check three things on the SC:Product categories listed, must include finished bags, not just fabric or yarnCertificate holder name, must match the factory you are ordering from exactlyValid from / Valid to dates, confirm the certificate is current at the time of your orderThis is the difference between a supplier who is GOTS-certified and a supplier whose bags are GOTS-certified. For EU market compliance under the Green Claims Directive, only the latter is acceptable.
What to Ask Your Canvas Supplier
How to Read a GOTS Scope Certificate for Canvas Bags
Before placing an order, ask your supplier to share their current Scope Certificate (SC). On the SC, verify:
A valid SC is the foundation of all GOTS certification canvas bags. Without it, no Transaction Certificate (TC) can be legitimately issued for your shipment.
How Oasis Canvas Handles Certification
Every bulk order from Oasis Canvas comes with a GOTS TC certificate issued for that specific shipment. Our Shanxi weaving base is certified under GOTS, BCI, and Regenagri, meaning the organic chain of custody starts at the cotton field, not just the factory floor.
We also hold European Flax certification for linen-blend options. All documentation is provided before shipment, ready for your compliance audit or retail onboarding process.
